Artist Andrea Amanda worked with PS 249’s CAMBDA after school students to explore the social emotional skills for “We the People” to thrive. She more fully describes the mural design in her Artist Statement:

This mural is divided into three parts, each representing a key aspect of social-emotional learning. The first part, on the left side of the wall, features a serene image of a girl sitting cross-legged and practicing breath work, surrounded by a variety of bugs and plants. The message, “In this home, all feelings are welcome with curiosity and kindness,” is written in bold letters above her. This section represents self-awareness and self-management, encouraging students to recognize and regulate their emotions in a healthy way.

Moving to the center of the mural, we see a group of kids interacting with each other in a positive and friendly way. They are smiling, sharing, and supporting each other, embodying the values of social awareness and relationship skills. This section reminds students of the importance of empathy, communication, and teamwork in building strong and healthy relationships.

Finally, on the right side of the mural, we see a young girl writing, “We the People,” in bold letters. Symbols of responsibility and decision-making surround her, reminding students of the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making. This section encourages students to take ownership of their actions and make choices that benefit themselves and their community.

Overall, this school mural is an inspiring reminder of the values and skills that are essential for social-emotional growth and success. Whether students are struggling with their emotions, building relationships with others, or making important decisions, this mural serves as a powerful visual guide and inspiration for them to thrive.
