The Poe Center in talking about the theme was geared towards transformation, linking it to the growth of the students. In order to show that in this mural we pulled ideas from the children and many of them were focusing more on butterflies and the transformation from egg to caterpillar to butterfly. In this mural we have another element showing the transformation which was the day and the transformation from day to night indicated on the mural with the sun and the moon but you can also see the color. We have warmer brighter sunnier colors (reds) transforming into more cooler colors (blues). The raven on the mural was added because we wanted to show the school in some way, the raven is the mascot of the school. The raven is pulling a curtain showcasing the mural. There is also one more symbol on the mural which is the Poe House. The Poe House is actually located in front of the school.
This mural was created by 4th and 5th graders. The school actually wanted 5th graders because since they will be graduating and moving on they wanted them to move on but with the idea that they left something behind, they created something for the school. This mural took about 15 weeks to complete afterschool. We had very talented kids for this mural who loved what they created. The principal Andrea Johnson indicated that “this mural represented the best of the community and it shows the transformation of what kids can come into from kids into wonderful adults.”
