The 5 classes we worked with at PS 33 were excited to beautify their school and community from day one. They all loved the idea of a bright and floral mural that would bring life and vibrancy to the school building. The left side depicts a flowery morning and is juxtaposed by a starry night on the right side. The morning side shows a pair of hands pouring seeds into the ground beneath a “Bienvenidos” banner, the night depicts two students pointing towards the sky, above them a skyline during sunset above a “Welcome” banner. There are leaves that adorn the borders of both windows.
This was a 12 week in-class program, and during that time we were really able to develop a connection with our students, as well as the teachers we worked with. This program had a huge impact on our students, they were able to deepen their love and appreciation for art and the ability to create. They mostly loved drawing gardens and portrayals of their neighborhoods. During our ribbon cutting ceremony, 5 of our students from different classes prepared speeches explaining how the mural made them feel. Joy, peace, happiness, was a common feeling expressed by each student.
