Artist Kristy McCarthy interprets what it means to “SOAR High” at the main entrance to the PS 86 building in Queens.
This four part mural series embodies PS 86’s motto of “soar high” and encourages students to dream big as they aim for the sky. The left wall remixes a previous bald eagle mural that has adorned the school’s front facing wall for years. This modern version of the eagle is painted in a realistic style with a colorful background of galaxy and clouds. The eagle is carrying a banner that says “soar high at PS 86.” The adjacent walls will mirror the colorful cloud background.
The two center murals are a colorful outer space scene with children as aeronautical professionals, including two airplane pilots and two astronauts, with a rocket ship. The children are ethnically diverse and represent the rich cultural diversity of the school and the surrounding community.
