Judith S. Kaye High School: Roadmap to JSK

Artist Chey Nelson and students from Judith H. Kaye High School in Queens explored the theme of “the journey ahead” in conceiving, designing, and producing the “Roadmap to JSK” mural. At the beginning of the project, many students were reluctant to participate. As the reality of creating something and leaving their mark behind began to set in, there was an apparent change in behavior and activity.

While brainstorming, the students proposed ideas that they felt most familiar with. The Van Wyck Expressway sign, the world sphere, the Statue of Liberty, and even the bus they ride on to school the Q40! It was the very neighborhood surrounding their school in Queens. Hence the name for their mural: “Roadmap to J.S.K.” Then the students proceeded to learn the skills necessary to apply the art to the wall, such as priming, blending, and even linework.

The Judith S. Kaye High School (J.S.K.), was a school of many elements in preparing students for their future and a lot of that can be seen throughout the mural. One of the biggest highlights was the Q40 bringing the students to school while different students on the bus displayed the variety of trades they’re able to learn in class. Once production started, participation was at an all-time high. Although we were only working with one class, other students passing by and even teachers joined in to paint as well! One of the greatest aspects of this project was that the student’s visions, as well as the staff members, heavily contributed to what came out in the end. It took a matter of 14 weeks for this project from beginning to end but ended up leaving a lifetime worth of memories and skills these students will find a hard time ever forgetting.
