Projectivity and Thrive Collective returned to PS 60 The Alice Austen School for Phase Two of an extreme mural makeover of the school, with an all-star roster of artists.  Curated by Projectivity Director Christian Penn, four artists each completed over 1,200 square feet of murals for different areas of the campus, including three hallway complexes consisting of multiple classrooms and a learning lab, and one interior courtyard with four long walls.

Principal Bonnano of PS 60 envisioned including different themes and specific concepts that the students learned about in each area.  Artists interpreted these themes and included different visual elements to inspire students to learn more about the people, places, and subjects in the murals.

  • Complex 1: “Little Leaders” by Marissa Molina, shows famous “firsts” from history, politics, entertainment, sports, literature, and science depicted as young children.
  • Complex 2: “Welcome to the STREAM Hall” by Josue Mendez, depicts different elements related to STREAM subjects Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
  • Complex 3: “NYC” by Danielle Mastrion, illustrates iconic New York City landmarks from all five boroughs. Together, they are meant to inspire young Staten Islanders about all the amazing sites and venues throughout the great city and to leave the island to visit them.
  • Interior Courtyard: “Little Artists” by Jodi Dareal, imagines iconic artists from the 15th – 20th centuries as children with different examples of their art.  The mural goes in chronological order showing the different time periods of famous art.
