PS 282K: Harmony

Featuring Art Direction by Joshua Gabriel (Brooklyn 2024)

This mural is a little extra special, both for veteran Thrive artist Joshua Gabriel and Thrive Collective.

For Joshua, it provided a unique opportunity to thank the elementary school that educated both of his children for almost a decade in the year his younger child graduated. For Thrive, it was our official post-COVID return to the building where we completed our largest school mural in NYC in 2014, where we piloted non-mural visual arts classes in 2015, where Michela Muserra completed her first Thrive mural in 2016, and where Christine Casado originated our Media program from 2016-2020.

Joshua’s oldest daughter appears in the seminal #BringArtBack video filmed with Kindergarten students at the school in 2016. That video launched the movement to eradicate artless education in New York City that still motivates us to this day.

We can imagine no better way to complete Joshua’s journey at the school with “Harmony” in the lunchroom, designed and painted with fifth graders including his son.
