PS 9: Global Citizens

Featuring Art Direction by Crash (Bronx 2022)

That time eight iconic NYC street artists transformed a school building in two weekends.

Reflecting the diverse student body of PS 9, the theme of the third floor murals was Global Citizens, evoking a connection between the Bronx and the world. Giannina’s design consists of a portrait of activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. In the same hallway, she has included a tree of life, using imagery from the book The Giving Tree to symbolize that one must be a lifelong learner and curious about the world.  The tree and “hand of knowledge” is reaching out to spread the message of knowledge, learning, and curiosity. Crash’s section greets students as they enter the gym. He was inspired by the Olympics and has created his own take on the Olympic flag. As in the Olympic flag, Crash used colors that show up at least once in every flag of every country in the world. In lieu of the classic Olympic rings, however, Crash utilized his signature “paint splashes.” Additionally, he collaged various elements such as basketball, music, dance, and soccer, pulling inspiration from the students and Principal. Lastly, he also included sneakers, connecting Bronx urban landscape imagery to this global display.
