Artist Chey Nelson and students from PS 171 in Queens interpreted the theme of “Model for our Future.” As students focused primarily on their love for family and friends and animals, the design took shape around the values of friendship, hope, and kindness.
This was an eight-week after school program in the art room. Most of the students were 5th graders, and talked about becoming artists, musicians, actors, and engineers. The students created a safe space to be themselves, and the principal asked us to return to work on other murals in their school.
