Lower Manhattan Arts Academy: LOMA Energy

Featuring Art Direction by Ashley Crawford (Manhattan 2024)

The basement wall of the Lower Manhattan Academy of Art became the site of “LoMA Energy,” an inspirational mural facilitated by artist Ashley Crawford, with students of the school. Drawing inspiration from positive affirmations and the creative spirit, our students explored becoming authentically themselves and creating without fear.

Situated within the historic Seward Park Campus, LoMA resides in the heart of the Lower East Side and is well known for its epic rooftop, which is covered in murals by iconic NYC graffiti artists. This mural is located in the school’s basement between the dance studio and the music room. The goal was to have a mural that could continue onto further walls, and to brighten up the atmosphere of the basement by providing words of wisdom.

During a concepting session students were asked how do they find inspiration when they’re not inspired. One student answered: “I stay resilient no matter how low I may be, because even if I don’t have light enough for myself, I may have light enough for others.”
