Thrive Collective proudly partnered with La Borinqueña and Chocobar Cortés BX to produce a mural celebrating Puerto Rico’s unique role shaping culture in New York City and beyond. Here’s how the producers of the La Borinqueña comic book describe the project:
Our latest collaboration with Chocolate Cortés is our La Borinqueña mural at the Chocobar Cortés BX! This public art piece surrounds our superhero with real life Puerto Rican heroes from the Bronx in the areas of the arts, athletics, and activism. Civil rights activist Evelina Lopez Antonetty; Tony award winning dancer, singer, and actress Chita Rivera; civil rights activist, filmmaker, lawyer, and Young Lords Party member Iris Morales; Oscar and Grammy winning actress and singer Irene Cara; comic book artist and writer George Pérez; civil rights activist, professor, and Young Lords Party member Richie Pérez; graffiti artist John ‘Crash One’ Matos; b-boy and breaking pioneer Crazy Legs; civil rights activist, professor, and Young Lords Party member Gloria Rodriguez; former professional baseball player, musician, and New York Yankee Bernie Williams. This mural was art directed by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, penciled by Chris Batista, inked by Sabrina Cintron, colored by Derek Santiago, and painted and installed by THRIVE COLLECTIVE. It was made possible with the support of Discover Puerto Rico, Don Q, MADDD Equities, and Third Avenue Business Improvement District.Our collaboration with Chocolate Cortés P.R. supports our shared philanthropic work in Puerto Rico.
Summer Youth Employment students worked withe Thrive artists led by our murals art director Marissa Molina to produce the mural in our Coney Island studios and install it. afterwards in the Bronx.
