On April 16, 2023, we were proud to celebrate two new murals and the soft launch of Mama Jean’s Create Hub in West Oakland with our Oakland City Coordinator De’Morea “Truck” Evans, Thrive Creative Director Kekoa, veteran teaching artist Kristen Hubbard, School Partners USA 2022 cohort members and alumni, and scores of friends and colleagues from the neighborhood.
These are Truck’s first (authorized) mural projects, and the culmination of a decades long dream to convert his barbershop into a safe space for kids to find and develop their voice. Named in honor of Truck’s mama, Jean, the hub continues her legacy of neighborhood kindness and hospitality before passing away of breast cancer in 2008. Grand Opening coming in June.
