The “BEE Rock Steady” mural celebrates two unique features of PS 163 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. First, it honors the unique role the schoolyard played in the earliest days of hip hop history, as the birthplace of the iconic b-boy and b-girl Rock Steady Crew. Second, it resides in a school garden renowned as a sanctuary for pollinator bees.
After working with some busy bees 🐝 we can definitely say we’ve gained a lot of cultural knowledge from PS 163. In a world of uncertainty, students at PS 163 know it’s important to live sustainably. We’ve learned to preserve and protect our environment, be it through horticulture or b-boy culture. While also neighboring the historic Rock Steady Park, it was no surprise to find artists SEN-1 and NICEO joining the party and adding their share to this project. PS 163 showed us just how to keep pollinating minds as we learn and bee rock steady through it all!
