The vibrant mural at our school celebrates the wonders of the cosmos, inviting students, parents, and visitors to embark on an imaginative journey through space. The theme was thoughtfully selected to inspire curiosity and creativity among our young learners. Each major planet—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—represents a specific grade level, from Pre-K to 5th grade. Embedded within the swirling colors of the universe, the names of these grades orbit their respective planets, creating a harmonious blend of education and art. On the right side of the mural, a colossal spaceship stands ready for interstellar adventures. Meanwhile, at the bottom left corner, an endearing UFO and a friendly alien emerge from the imaginations of our talented students. Completing the cosmic tableau, Planet PS 18—the teacher’s planet—shares space with whimsical cat astronauts, all inspired by the boundless creativity of our school community.
Our mural project engaged a diverse group of participants. Ten enthusiastic 2nd graders and twenty-four curious Pre-K students collaborated to bring this celestial masterpiece to life. It had 2 classroom activity and 2 class for mural paint activity. The mural now graces the school entrance area, where parents eagerly pick up and drop off their children. As we painted, not only did the kids revel in their artistic expression, but parents also delighted in witnessing their children’s creativity on mural. The mural’s interactive design, with an open “space” in the central area, encourages everyone to be a star. Additionally, the school has adorned the mural with beautiful stars, each featuring the face of a student who achieved 100% attendance the previous month.
