Story of Impact- Set the Table (December 2023)
“Set the table.” This had become the theme at our mentoring sessions in December 2023. With every gathering we encouraged and reinforced the idea “there is a seat at the table for you.” This particular group of young men expressed feeling welcomed at the table and looking forward to each meeting. Communication grew stronger, deeper and more consistent in our group chats as mentees felt more and more comfortable with weighing in on decisions from activities to our lunch menus. It was the small things that really strengthened the bond. Our group chats became becoming a place where their voices were heard and valued.
It was amazing to see how a simple theme like “there is a seat at the table for you” could create such a powerful sense of belonging and connection. It was evident the young men in our group not only grew in confidence but also became more invested in the community we were building. For young men with backgrounds in incarceration, the experience of being welcomed and supported in a brotherhood where they could feel safe and valued was transformative. It wasn’t just about learning life skills or making decisions; it was always about rebuilding trust—both in themselves and in others.
We are grateful to have partnered with Greg and his band of mentors at Brotherhood Restored, mentors who were and still are passionate about creating an environment where young people can break free from past labels and experiences. When you’ve been through something like incarceration or have family connected to it, having a space where you can restore that sense of brotherhood and belonging can be a game changer.
