On July 3, A portion of #CenterStreet by #FoleySquare was co-named #BlackLivesMatter. To mark the occasion a mural was painted on the street. Organized by @wxystudio, each of the mural three words was designed by a different artist— Sophia Dowson @iamwetpaint , Tijay Mohammed @artoftijay and Patrice Payne @pjpayne.art — and painted on the street in partnership with the local muralist collective @tatscru and a youth arts nonprofit called @nycthrive .All the people and organizations involved were selected for their alignment with the anti-racist principles of the Black Lives Matter movement, and with a careful balance of genders, sexual orientations, and religious backgrounds. Rather than rushing to get something on the ground, the New York City Public Design Commission, which has jurisdiction over all buildings and art proposed on city-owned property, slowed the process down and listened to the community. “We actually took the time to have the conversations with people that are in the actual Black Lives Matter movement,” says Iustin Moore @j.g.moore , executive director of the Public Design Commission.

On July 3 a different sort of Black Lives Matter street painting was unveiled in Lower Manhattan along Centre Street between Reade & Worth streets, just off Foley Square. The mural, captured here by videographer @jrobertson.nyc, features the work of three emerging local artists, each of whom designed one of the words — @artoftijay (BLACK), @iamwetpaint (LIVES), and @pjpayne.art (MATTER). Legendary Bronx muralists @tatscru helped paint the work, along with youth arts nonprofit Thrive Collective (@nycthrive). Foley Square is, of course, home to the #AfricanBurialGroundNationalMonument, and the mural itself fronts several elements of our justice system. Thanks to all the photographers and videographers who captured the #BlackLivesMatter mural making moments last week. Check out @nycthrive for process and finished photos, videos, and more. Scroll ➡️ for personal highlights speaking outside the courthouse where I was sworn into the bar, and with @artoftijay who designed the word BLACK that #ThriveCollective helped execute. “As a justice movement founded to eradicate racial and economic disparities in public education, Thrive Collective stands in solidarity with our Black students, artists, educators, coaches, mentors, neighbors, friends, families, partners, and allies in the fight against racial injustices in the criminal justice system and everywhere they persist. We believe that Black Lives Matter. We humbly stand with all who assert their right to live free from systemic racism.” Read more at ThriveCollective.org/BLM. #KindnessBeatsTheVirus 1-2 @joerussophoto 3 @queenofheartsglobal 4-6 @gzfotografias 7 @xo_desiree
